Top 5 Things to Do in Birštonas, Lithuania

Last week, I visited Birštonas for the very first time! Having spent the past decade living in Asia, I realized how much I had missed out on exploring Lithuania and discovering beautiful places right here at home. So, I planned a wellness getaway to Birštonas and Druskininkai –and it turned out to be such an amazing experience!

If you’re considering a Lithuanian resort for your next vacation, I highly recommend putting Birštonas at the top of your list. It’s cozy, charming, and full of hidden gems that will make you fall in love with Lithuania. To help you plan your trip, I’m sharing my Top 5 Things to Do in this super cute town!

Top 5 Things to Do in Birštonas

1. Indulge in Spa Treatments

Birštonas is one of Lithuania’s most famous wellness towns – and for good reason. The town is blessed with natural mineral waters that have been known for their healing properties for centuries. You’ll find a wide selection of spa hotels offering everything from luxurious massages and facials to medical wellness programs.

We chose to stay at the Vytautas Mineral SPA, and I can honestly say I had a wonderful SPA experience. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by calming interiors, the soft scent of essential oils, and a feeling that you’re about to do something very good for your body and soul.

Their extensive spa menu includes hundreds of treatments, and since I had been struggling with a persistent dry cough (thanks to post-COVID symptoms), I focused on therapies aimed at improving lung health.

One standout treatment was the mineral water inhalation therapy. It’s a simple but powerful procedure where you breathe in mineral-rich water vapor through a special mask. It only lasted about ten minutes, but I felt immediate relief in my breathing!

We also spent time relaxing in the salt therapy room, reclining on cozy chairs while inhaling the natural microelements. I couldn’t believe it – after just these two treatments, my lingering three-week cough was completely gone.

If you’re visiting Birštonas, even if you don’t have any medical concerns, I highly recommend treating yourself to some spa time. It’s a perfect way to relax, recharge, and experience the wellness side of Lithuania.

Fun Fact: Lithuania received the ITB Health Tourism Award in 2025, recognizing it as a destination offering world-class medical and spa services!

2. Fly in a Hot Air Balloon

If you’re looking for something truly unforgettable, you HAVE to try a hot air balloon flight over Birštonas.

I’ll be honest – I am super afraid of heights. The idea of floating hundreds of meters above the ground in a wicker basket run by gas and wind was absolutely terrifying. But you know what? It ended up being one of the most magical experiences of my life.

Birštonas is nestled along the Nemunas River, with its beautiful curves and lush green forests and seeing it all from above was simply breathtaking. The scenery stretched out in every direction like a giant green carpet and the peacefulness up in the sky was surreal. It’s so quiet and the movements are so gentle, it feels almost like a dream.

Our landing was smooth, right in the middle of a sunlit field surrounded by curious cows who came over to greet us! Afterwards, we celebrated with a glass of champagne and a fun little initiation ceremony for first-time flyers.

If you’re braver than me (or even if you’re not!), don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience. And if you get hooked (like I think you might), know that you can also fly over Vilnius, one of the very few European capitals where hot air balloon flights are allowed!

3. Dine at “Eklektika” Restaurant

After our balloon adventure, we were ready for a feast. We went to Eklektika restaurant, located at the stylish EGO Hotel and it did not disappoint.

The menu offers a creative mix of flavors, beautifully presented dishes and a cozy yet elegant atmosphere – perfect for winding down after an active day.

I ordered the octopus dish, and it was simply delicious – fresh, tender and packed with flavor. (You’ll find some photos below!) If you’re looking for a place in Birštonas where you can enjoy a good glass of wine and an amazing meal, I definitely recommend stopping by Eklektika.

4. Climb the Birštonas Observation Tower

If floating in the sky isn’t quite your thing (yet!), another way to admire Birštonas’ beautiful surroundings is by climbing the Birštonas Observation Tower – the tallest observation tower in Lithuania!

Standing at 55 meters tall, the tower offers panoramic views of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park and the surrounding forests and meadows.

The climb up is relatively easy – the path spirals gently upwards, and you can take breaks along the way to enjoy the views through the open structure. When we visited, the sun was shining, there were almost no other visitors and the peacefulness made the whole experience even more special.

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360° views that stretch as far as the eye can see. It’s the perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Overall, Birštonas surprised me in the best way possible. It’s a town that combines wellness, adventure, nature, and delicious food — all wrapped up in a peaceful, friendly atmosphere.

I already can’t wait to go back and explore even more! If you have any questions or need tips for planning your trip, feel free to reach out in the comments!

5. Summer Sleigh Rides

We also visited and tried firsthand an attraction called summer sleigh – and let me tell you, it was SO much fun! The track is about 600 meters long, and the highlight is this awesome turn that loops 10 meters up in the air. What I loved the most is that you can control your own speed – you can go as fast as 40 km/h or slow it down if you’re riding with younger kids (it’s suitable for little ones from age 4!).

The sleighs are double-seaters and feel really safe, so it’s a great thrill for both daredevils and cautious parents alike. The twists and turns gave us such a fun rush – smiles all around!
