Science centre Singapore for curious kids

When looking for a kids friendly place in Singapore, check out the Science Centre Area. It is an amazing educational and interactive place with numerous activities for kids of all ages. And it’s fun for adults too!

Let’s see what you can do with children in and around Singapore’s Science Centre.

1. SCIENCE CENTRE SINGAPORE FOR KIDS

While children are taught to be ‘science literate’ at schools, this centre takes science to the next level. It is such a great place where science is made accessible and engaging for even the tiniest of visitors.

Science Centre Singapore aims to create an environment where children (and their parents) are empowered to advance their own learning and maybe be inspired to do something amazing with their futures.

The first time I took Thea to the Science Centre she was slightly over 2 years old.

I wasn’t sure this would be a great place for such a young child, however I was wrong. We observed a fire experiment conducted by friendly staff, took photos with Einstein, tried various educational stations, Thea had fun with plenty of hands on experience and overall we had a really great educational time.  Overall this Science Centre is a great place for kids and I do recommend paying it a visit.

2. THE OMNI-THEATRE

The Omni-theatre is Singapore’s only IMAX dome theatre. This massive dome screen makes it truly an interesting experience. I have never been to a dome cinema before so I enjoyed it as much as Thea did.

The Omni-theatre screens various digital educational movies as well as hosts live planetarium shows. The movie we watched was about the big bang theory, molecules and us coming from stars. While the topic was way too complex for a two year old, she loved the dome screen and all that was going on in front and above her. These movies and shows are more suitable for the general audience aged 7 and above, however if you have a younger visitor with you, give it a go too. Thea was mesmerised during the entire show and asked for another one once the one we watched was over.  

3. SNOW CITY

Snow City is Singapore’s first and currently the only one permanent indoor Snow Centre. It is an indoor winter playground with a snow chamber that delivers Arctic experience all year round and therefore makes it a great place to escape the tropical heat.

A 60-metre long or 3-storey high snow slope that will definitely get your adrenaline pumping when you slide down with our snow tubes;

I grew up in a cold climate and snow has never been much of a surprise, however for visitors who have never seen snow this can be a breathtaking experience. Make sure you slide the 60 meters long (or 3 storey high) snow slope down from a hill with a snow tube! Albeit cold- it is really fun!

Another attraction in Snow City that should not be missed is drifting on ice in a bumper car. The 5- minute long bumper car ride on ice guarantees lots of fun for the entire family!

Know before you go:

• Admission tickets include complimentary use of winter jackets and boots.
• All guests are required to wear ankle-length pants and socks.
• Gloves and waterproof pants are available for rent for both adults and children whilst socks are available for purchase onsite.
• Bumper car rides are optional at $5 per ride, $9 for 2 rides and $12 for 3 rides

4. THE CLIFF @ SNOW CITY SINGAPORE

Good news for bouldering and rock climbing fans! There is a climbing wall at Snow City too!

The Cliff is a vertigo climbing wall which comprises of 10 climbing lanes of various difficulty levels and is big enough to allow 20 climbers to climb simultaneously.

Children as young as 3 years old are welcome to climb and build their confidence and coordination skills.

5. KidsSTOP @ SCIENCE CENTRE

KidsSTOP is Children’s Science Centre with more than 20 exhibits designed to present concepts of science, engineering, maths and technology. It is one-of-its-kind edutainment centre in Singapore that aims to engage children and provide them with ample opportunities to learn through interactive play.  

There are four interactive themed zones in the exhibition gallery, each designed to engage children’s imagination and creativity. Little explorers aged 8 years and below are provided with plenty of room to explore science topics through diverse hands-on activities. 

My daughter loves dinosaurs so for her one of the highlights is a Dino Pit. It is a relatively small but very accurate replica of an excavation site with a skeleton of a big teethed dinosaur.

To sum up KidsSTOP really succeeds at making learning positive and enjoyable for young children.

6. BUTTERFLIES UP-CLOSE

The butterflies’ enclosure feels a bit run down however the exhibition in nevertheless interesting and useful for children. Each child is given a magnifying glass and is invited to wander around the facility and explore thousands of different butterflies up- close.

Occasionally the butterflies land on the little explorers making it an even more exciting experience. There are several feeding and breeding stations and helpful staff ready to answer any questions and explain about the numerous threats and dangers during each stage of the butterflies’ life cycle.

Science Centre Singapore with its extensions and additions is an amazing family friendly place. It’s for a reason they receive more than 1 million visitors annually. If you are looking for some inspiration on where to go with kids, it’s definitely a great choice.
